While pursuing a goal, we always focus on planning, setting short-term goals, monitoring our behaviours etc. These are important parts of pursuing a goal but work under the assumption that we are already motivated to achieve a particular goal. If you have been finding it hard to motivate yourself, look through our table below to help you build your intention further.

Keeping in mind the goal you have, answer the following:

What are the pros of pursuing your goal?

What are the cons of pursuing your goal?

If you decide not to change right now, what will the future look like for you? How would things be? What will it be like to meet someone from your present or past?

If you decide to make the change now, how different would your future be? How would things be? How would you feel?

What do you want most in life? Is your current behaviour helping you achieve what you want?

Take some time out when you’re relaxed and free to think over the questions and write your answers for the same-

  1. What kind of effort will help you achieve the goal?

  2. How much time (on a weekly basis) would you have to put in?

  3. What is challenging/ difficult about pursuing this goal? Do you feel fear, embarrassment, or frustration?

  4. How can you take care of these emotions?

  5. What will help you feel like you can achieve your goal?

  6. Is there a way to increase that capacity?

  7. What are the other times when you have achieved something- What helped then?

  8. How valuable is the goal you have in mind? As a result, how valuable is the effort you’re willing to put in?

  9. How does accomplishing this goal align with your values and aspirations?

  10. What specific strategies or resources can you make use of to support your progress?

We would recommend printing out this sheet and listing down your thoughts.

Often, motivation can have a lot to do with confidence building- Knowing that you have the potential to work towards your goal and stay determined. Our counsellors could help you make sense of your answers to these worksheets, and promote confidence to work towards your goals.

If you would like to discuss this further or need some help or support in this or any other area, our counsellors would be happy to help.
